Generation Z in the Workplace

We are witnessing immense changes in the workplace. Artificial intelligence is crafting the future of work and the world is yet to see how it will transform our society and economy.

Parallel with its growing impact on productivity and job roles, there is another development that the workplace should prepare for. It is the influx of “digital natives” or Generation Z into the workforce.

Known also as Zoomers and post-Millennials, Gen Z represents those born from 1997 to 2012. As they have been exposed to the internet and digital technologies from an early age, it is expected that they would be more accustomed to the AI-shaped work practices than other generations. This is why understanding the culture of this generational cohort could help other generations – baby boomers, Gen X, and millennials prepare for the transformation of the workplace.

Generation Z comprises about 21% of the U.S. population. Its oldest members are currently 26 and already filling up job positions across the country, introducing a new perspective into the workplace and challenging employers to adapt to them. They are the future.

What we need at work is an abundance of talents. “Digital natives” bring to the workplace new skills and ideas. Understanding this generation, their habits, expectations, work modality preference, and communication styles are crucial in paving the way to a loyal workforce. Creating a welcoming environment and demonstrating commitment to this cohort will make them loyal and willing to stay in your company.

My passion for studying this generation that I have had in my classes for the past 6+ years inspired me to start researching Gen Z in the workplace and creating a training plan for companies to help them accommodate and keep this unique cohort at work.
